24th August 10Australian open women’s 20k Walk title at Brisbane
On Sunday 23 Aug, Kelly Ruddick competed in the Australian open women’s 20k Walk title at Brisbane.

She was very pleased to be able to come home with a silver medal. The race was won by Claire Tallent, with Czech walker Zuzanna Schindlerova second and Kelly third.
As the Czech walker was competing by invitation, she was given a silver medal and Kelly was also given a silver medal for being the second Australian.

Zuzanna was a good sport, encouraging Kelly to stick with her during the race.

Kelly had been pretty sick all week and was a 50/50 proposition as to whether she should compete. At the start, she was on fire for about 8 k’s, then fell into a complete heap.
The last 12 k’s were only survival as she kept telling herself that if she finished, she should get a medal, and this thought sustained her.

She ended up with a time that she was disappointed with, but it was a sizeable PB on a difficult, hilly course.

  • Time, 1 hour 42:32, a 2 min PB. All things considered, it was a good result.

10th August 09"Vale" former Ballarat Harrier member Judy McDowall
Bold run ends for Judy McDowall

MUCH-LOVED athlete Judy McDowall died on the weekend after a four-year battle with cancer, which she had described as the hardest marathon of her life.

Ms McDowall passed away on Saturday night at the Nullawarre home of her sister Maureen Murnane, surrounded by family members and just one day after her 50th birthday.

"She was always a positive person," sister Margaret Moloney said yesterday.
"We spent four years caring for Judy and looking after her. She kept us very positive and kept us going."

Known for her wide smile and enthusiastic attitude, Ms McDowall touched many people during her 25 years as a competitive runner.

Friend and fellow runner Jenny Dowie said the commitment Ms McDowall put into her sport was the same commitment she put into her friends and family.
"She was such a determined and strong person, but a lovely and considerate person as well. She never sounded down. She was really cheerful and she never gave in," Ms Dowie said.

"We just had a special bond because we fought so many battles in running races together. That's the thing I share with her that I share with no one else."

In an interview with The Standard three years ago, Ms McDowall admitted to disbelief when she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in August 2005.

"I couldn't understand how I got this," she said.

"I'm a non-smoker, a non-drinker, a health and fitness fanatic. To some that would sound like a boring life. . . to me it was the only life."

Warrnambool Athletic Club president Peter Auchettl said Ms McDowall had been a terrific stalwart of the club right up to the 2008 season, when she still competed.

Ms McDowall contested 10 marathons and countless half-marathons, winning the Koroit to Warrnambool half-marathon six times.

She was also a six-time winner of Warrnambool's popular summer 10-kilometre Surf 'T' Surf.
She was the second Australian home in the 1989 Melbourne Marathon.

    17th July 09Absolute Yoga Studio
My name is Tracey Bowler and I have recently opened the Absolute Yoga Studio in central Ballarat. I offer a range of classes in yoga and relaxation.

I am writing today to inform you of my new business and services, and of how yoga can be of particular benefit to runners. I already have several clients who are dedicated runners and use the classes as a complimentary aid to their training.

The most obvious benefit gained by runners is in the physical recovery of muscles and joints. It's great for core strength and flexibility, and is especially helpful in getting over a heavy training session.

Even at the highest level runners can be wound up or tight through their bodies, and regular yoga practice can offset these effects. I teach many poses and stretches which will loosen the hips, legs, strengthen the back and rejuvinate the whole body. Specific breathing techniques can also be used to flush the body with oxygenated blood before and during a run, calming the heart and mind and thus making it easier to be present without losing focus and intensity.

These benefits can all translate to better results for your members.

Many AFL teams including Geelong , Hawthorn, Melbourne , St Kilda and Richmond incorporate yoga into their regime. In fact, yoga is now used by a mass of elite athletic teams including Iron Men, Cricketers and countless Olympians. Yoga has been credited with giving many teams a competitive edge, and ongoing practice helps them to keep it.

Have you considered the benefits that yoga has to offer your members?

Absolute Yoga can run sessions specifically tailored to the needs of the Ballarat Harriers. Sessions can be restorative with a focus on stretching muscles, breathing and relaxation or strength building and endurance. Alternatively your members may like to come to the Studio at 11A Grenville Street Nth Ballarat and check out a session for themselves, in which case I could offer a discount for their first lesson.

If you would like to discuss please call me on 0435055991, and I will be happy to negotiate.

29th June 09Kelly Ruddick wins State 20k walk Title
    Congratulations Kelly

Kelly Ruddick won her second state walking title this season on Sunday in Melbourne. Athletic Victoria’s 20k title was conducted by the Victorian Walkers Club over a 2k circuit in ideal conditions at Albert Park.

This is the first time Kelly has completed 20k, but managed well, completing the second half only 23 seconds slower than the first, and she pulled up in good condition.

She was pleased with her time of 1hr 43:57 and is starting to get the feel of what pace she can maintain in long races.

  • Having won over 15k at Bendigo last month, she will complete the last of the state road championships in July over 10k and will then contest the Australian title at Sydney in August.

21st June 09a Report by Ballarat Harrier member James Attard
  • G'day everyone,

Nearing the end of the trip now and had my second last race yesterday which was the 3rd of the French Grand Prix races held in Cuincy in the North of France. After the cancellation of the race in Casablanca this was Emily's only chance to see me in action over here. Unfortunately I couldn't quite put in the same performance as earlier on in the trip!

The race was over the standard sprint distance of 5km run/ 30km bike/ 5km run, and about halfway through the first 5km things were already not feeling great for me. I have been able to get a couple of good weeks training in since Hungary but I felt I'd lost a lot of the race conditioning that only comes with fast racing. Anyway onto the bike and I was in the chasing pack about 50sec down on the leading bunch of 20 or so guys. Fortunately this pack had some strong cyclists and we worked hard together to catch the lead bunch within about 7 or 8km. From there I thought I may as well have a crack on the bike and try and get into a break as I wasn't feeling confident with my last run. I made a few attempts but couldn't pick the right break so entered transition amongst the leading pack with a few escapees up the road.

My transition was surprisingly good as I was using bike shoes as I'd broken my platforms a few weeks earlier. From here though I only went backwards, my legs just didn't want to go faster than what felt like a jog! In the end I finished a disappointing 37th with the team finishing 8th, not a good day for either of us!

Emily and I still have the hire car so it's off to Belgium today, and possibly onto Switzerland after that, before getting Emily back to Paris for her flight back to Oz. Then it's one last race for me in Chaumont, the 4th French Grand Prix which is a team time trial and not long after that I'll be back in the snow of Ballarat! I can't believe it's snowed there already, might take some getting used to after a European summer!

Thanks everyone for the continued support, looking forward to catching up with everyone soon.

Below is a snip-it of Raf and I training, Casablanca style!

    hope everyone is well,

24th May 09Kelly Ruddick wins State 15k Walk Title
    Congratulations to Kelly Ruddick
  • Kelly Ruddick competed at Bendigo this Sunday morning, 24th May, in the Victorian 15k walk championship. She was successful in winning her first state title, completing the 15k in a winning time of 76:31.
(She would have also won the men’s title, being the overall winner, but obviously, a few of the top men were missing on the day.)

She was also 2nd in the Vic country 10k title, held simultaneously, being well beaten by Aussie champ Jess Rothwell, who chose to only complete the 10k course. This is Kelly’s second attempt at 15k and was easily a PB.

Kelly will have her first attempt at 20k in July when she contests the State 20k title at Albert Park.

17th May 09a Report by Ballarat Harrier member James Attard
  • G’day everyone,

I’ve had a pretty good couple of weeks since the last race in Arbizu, mostly just training, eating, sleeping and relaxing! This last weekend saw Raf and I make the trip to Bilbao for the fifth edition of the Bilbao Duathlon. I got to spend a couple of days there with my Mum and her friend Leys, who’d made the trip from the UK for the race and to come back to Gernika for a weeks holiday. Before the race we got to explore the city walking through the old town and making a trip to the world renowned Guggenheim Museum, and of coarse sampling of the city’s finest tapas!

The race itself was held over the sprint distance of 5km run/20km ride/2.5km run, and in keeping in tradition with most races in the Basque country, the bike was of coarse hilly to say the least. This years race had reached capacity some weeks before the event and had attracted a strong international field along with the usual tough contenders from Spain.

The pace in the first run was on from the gun, giving us little time to take in our surroundings on the riverbank. Halfway through and I was really starting to feel the effects of going out so hard. As we were running back past the Guggenheim amongst the throngs of tourists I started to lose touch with the leaders Galinier and Capoferi from France and Raf. I entered transition some with 2 Spaniards some 18secs down on the 3 in front.

As I said earlier the bike was tough, basically we climbed out of transition for 10km, turned around and came back down! I felt I was riding quite well although I couldn’t manage to keep up with one of the Spaniards who attacked the moment we reached the steep section of the climb. I entered transition this time in a group of 6-8, with the two Frenchman out of reach after a very strong ride and the Spaniard Garcia just 10secs up the road.

With a slick transition I managed to get the jump on my group and was in 4th place with my eyes firmly set on Garcia in 3rd. Things weren’t all going my way though and before the turn around Raf and some others had come back past me and I was 7th or 8th and really struggling to keep them in reach. The run back to the finish had me going through some real highs and lows, at times I felt I could get going again and perhaps sneak onto the podium while at others I felt I’d be lucky to hold onto a top 10 with a big group not far behind. As it turned out I nearly got in a battle for third but wasn’t quite strong enough at the end and Raf managed to out sprint us all to grab 3rd with me taking 5th.

Although not entirely satisfied with the run off the bike, still happy with a solid race of fast running and a tough bike and can hopefully get it all together for the European Champs in Budapest on the 23rd May. for the full list of photo's: click here

17th May 09Peter Eason wins in Darwin
    Congratulations Peter Eason

  • Darwin financial planner Peter Eason won the half marathon today at Arafura Games 2009. The 35-year-old Eason ran a well-planned race. He was very relaxed until the half-way mark of the 21.1km event then clapped on the pace to take the lead and win by 44 seconds from Agostu Ramos, a 22-year-old from Timor Leste.

Army dentist Anthony Craig from Townsville was a further 29 seconds back in third place. Eason, who has been living in Darwin for three and a half years, grew up in Ballarat (Victoria) – the home of great distance runners.

He has won the ABC Half Marathon three times as well as the Brisbane and Victorian Country Half Marathons. “Today I ran comfortably in the muggy conditions,” he said. “I had a bit of scare when Ramos overtook Anthony Craig but I carried on okay.“ “I ran the second half much faster than the first half.”

  • Eason won the 10,000metres track event during the week and finished second to Craig in the 5,000 metres.

3rd May 09another duathlon report from James Attard
    Hi everyone,
another week into this European exploration, well call it what you like but exploration works for me, and I've found what I came searching for, more on that later though!

Another week and you guessed it another race! Sunday saw Raf, myself and Cesar (our Basque manager!) travelling to the nearby region of Navara, to a small town called Arbizu. Unfortunately we didn't get to see too much of what Arbizu had to offer, the weather was just terrible.
Constant rain for the whole race and about 10c once it warmed up!

Being so cold, the 5th race on our busy schedule, and a little low key compared to our earlier races I was finding it really hard to get motivated to race. Even when the gun went off I just couldn't get my head around getting the job done. Raf and I had planned to run the first run a solid tempo to try and get a gap on some
of the strong local riders who seem to be able to power up the hills with ease! Raf was doing his bit and soon he'd lost everyone, including me! It seemed to take a big effort just to get back to him so we could ride together as planned.

The ride was two laps of a 16km loop with a 6km climb each lap. I seemed to be suffering the same fate on the bike as the run and Raf was on his own off the front once we hit the climb. Luckily I reached the top of the climb before the Basque athlete San Martin had caught me and we were able to bridge the gap back to Raf.
So second lap of the bike and back to the climb and even though I knew it was coming I just couldn't respond to Raf's attack at the bottom of the climb. This time over the top of climb I was on my own about 15sec down on Raf and San Martin and looking like holding onto 3rd would now be a good result.

For whatever reason though my attitude started to change and I got it into my head that I could catch them and get back into the race. Whether it was the cold and I just couldn't feel any pain in my legs I'm not sure but I was finally riding strong and 2km out of transition I managed to catch Raf and San Martin.
I couldn't believe it, from being in such a bad way and negative attitude I'd now ridden myself back into contention and all of sudden my spirits were high.

Into transition, swap wet cycling shoes for wet running shoes, and I got the jump on Raf. The start of the run was terrible, I had no feeling in my legs or feet they were just so numb, I'm sure it would have been a site to see watching me run the first 1km or so. After that I just had to settle in to a strong rhythm to make sure I kept the
advantage I'd got on Raf in transition. The win was extremely satisfying for me under the circumstances. It also led me to my momentous find I touched on earlier, a txapela! What on earth is a txapela you ask? It's a traditional Basque hat given to the txapelduna (champion) of pretty much all events held in the Basque country.
The post race food was also second to none, and unlike anything we get in Australia. Nice hot chorizo sausage, bread, wine, cheese. you’ve got to take time to appreciate these things! Everyone had most definitely earned it!

Next weekend finally finds me with no racing, a chance to sort out the little niggles and prepare for the upcoming races, the next being my last in the Basque region, the Bilbao Duathlon on the 10th May. So I guess it's a weekend off for you all too, enjoy!

    regards
    James

23rd April 09another duathlon report from James Attard
    Hi everyone,
what a busy couple of weeks since the last update! After the race in Jard sur Mer, I travelled down to our base in the north region of Spain to our apartment in Gernika. I'm here in the Basque country with Raf and his wife Lianne and baby Sebastian.

Continuing with our busy racing schedule we were straight back up to Chatearoux, France for the second race in the French Grand Prix series. This race was over the Olympic distance again like in Thailand. The first 5km of the first run was pedestrian slow, but once Sergio Silva (Portuguese cross country winner)
hit the front the pack soon split up. I found myself a bit further back than I'd have liked, just trailing off the second pack. Perhaps the racing and travelling taking its toll.

A good transition saw me onto the bike more or less at the front of the group I'd been trailing, with only 3 or 4 guys up the road. This week’s bike was much better for me, even with being tested on the first run I felt I had some punch back in the legs and found the bike pretty comfortable, easily responding to any attacks.

Onto the last run and again with a great transition I was into 3rd place (two guys up the road and probably had 1st and 2nd sewn up). Here I got a little excited and rather than just running with duathlons fastest Silva, I went past him but soon paid the price. I couldn't keep the tempo and had to ease off slipping back to 11th.
Half way thru the 5km I also got a yellow card (stop and go) for not racking my bike correctly. This didn't turn out as bad as it sounds; I gathered myself and kicked on to finish a credible 9th.

Back on the train and only 4 full days to recover for the International Duathlon of Gernika, would it be enough! It must be a sign of my fitness and strength this year as my legs weren't actually that bad following the race in Chateau roux. I think back a couple of years and I'd have been a wreck after a tough Olympic distance duathlon.

The Gernika duathlon is unlike any I've competed in. The support this race receives from the entire community is amazing, as you prepare for the race it feels as if everyone else around you that isn't racing is preparing themselves for a huge party. The race itself runs through the streets of Gernika,
and the first run was two laps of a 2.5km circuit. The pace this week felt comfortable for me and I was happy I'd made a full recovery. On to the bike with the front group of about 12. Raf and I had opted again this week to use our platforms (running shoes on the bike), a decision that probably ended up costing us!

The French and Belgian athletes knew that if we were all to start the second run together Raf and I would have been hard to beat, so it was there objective to ride away from us. I responded well to the first few attacks, but the fourth caught me off gaurd and 3 guys got up the road.
Unfortunately very few from my bunch were prepared to work and chase, so it was obvious we were soon racing for 4th! Later on in the bike another 3 guys got away, and after working pretty hard I just didn't have the legs to go with them. So out onto the run in 7th place there was only 2.5km now to improve my placing.
It didn't take too much to move into 6th but it seemed as if a top 5 was out of reach. The 2008 World off road duathlon champion was holding on firm to 5th and only slowly coming back to me. With about 400m to go I was all of a sudden on top of him and with a final kick managed to just get him on the line.

Another top 5, a little disappointing though as it felt like a day that could have been! You've got to stick with your decisions though and if they don't work out then learn by them! I've learnt again this race, so look out you Euro's there's more to come yet!

Back to some more regular training now, racing again this weekend but will just train through it as I haven't even done a proper long run since leaving Melbourne with all the travel and racing! After that it's basically a weekend on, weekend off of racing till the end of the trip!

Sorry for the novel, I'm sure you're getting used to them by now!
    James

21st April 09a report on the Boston marathon by Lee Troop
    Boston marathon race report
  • Boston marathon race went as well as expected. I was 12th or 13th in 2hr 16:21
Guys took off fast at start and I stuck to race plan of using American Brian Sell. We quickly formed a second pack but unfortunately it was a head wind the whole way (and I mean the whole damn way!!!!) and then Sell and I had to do all the work.

We had about 8 guys sitting on us and we dropped all of them except a Russian who ended up out kicking both of us in the last 400m. We were 66.30 at half way and then 69.45 2nd half.
Definitely needed 4-5 guys helping share the work for us to have run any quicker but as it was only Sell and I, it was what it was.

I have had a few interruptions and only had a good 12-14 week block going in and I am content with the race and know that I could not have run any different (except beat the Russian!!) as I would have been in no man's land for the 1st half and tired badly in the 2nd half.
I know I was not is great shape before the event but I ran solidly and I am not as smashed as I thought I would be. I guess the only redemption I got was the Russian was 17/18th at the Olympics and Sell was 23rd and I split them, so that is some comfort from 2008.

Now look forward to getting really fit and having an uninterrupted prep to Chicago or New York. The crowd was awesome and doing this race was definitely worth it. TROOPY

6th April 09a Report by Ballarat Harrier member James Attard
  • Duathlete James Attard is currently competing overseas, here is his report

Hi all, I've settled in nicely to the French lifestyle rather quickly, minus the croissants and pain au chocolat of coarse! The weather has been a little cool but definitely a lot easier to race in than last weekend in Thailand.

Speaking of racing I had my first taste of the famous French Grand Prix series on the west coast of France yesterday at Jard sur Mer. The race was a sprint distance event, covering a 5km run/30km bike/5km run.
These races are the best in the world outside of the world champs, and basically the field resembles a championship race. With that in mind I was surprised at how calm I was on the start line, normally I'm quite
nervous before the gun goes. Maybe today though I felt I was well prepared and in good shape for what lay ahead.

The first run was 3 laps of a 1.7km circuit and the pace was actually not too fast, so I just stayed near front and out of trouble. There was one obstacle to negotiate with a split set of stairs to run down, I seemed to be able to
tackle these faster than anyone which gave me confidence as I ran. I surged into transition and managed to sneak out in front of the bunch.

Onto the bike with 6 laps of a 5km circuit and feeling pretty good. My objective for the bike was pretty much to stay out of the wind and conserve energy for the final run. Again the pace wasn't on too much which made the
conserving energy bit ok but the second bunch managed to catch us, swelling the size of the bunch to around 50 guys. This made it quite difficult to stay near the front of the bunch, and I was probably in the back third of the bunch heading into transition.

Fortunately I'd opted to use platforms on the bike (were you ride in your running shoes) which does make the bike a little harder but allows for lightning fast transitions! I exited T2 in about 8th or 9th place and was again
feeling pretty good. I soon found myself moving through the group and into 4th place with 1st-3rd 10-15sec up the road. At first I wasn't too sure if I'd gone out too hard but I just had to reassure myself that I'd done the work and the strength was there. My mate from Perth Raf Baugh came flying past only to be yellow carded on
the second lap with a stop/go for not putting his helmet in the correct place in transition (the French officials really like to involve themselves in the race!). About halfway through the second lap I'd dropped back to 6th with a group of 6 or more guys less than 10sec behind. With a couple of surges though I managed to get
pass one guy and pass another with about 400m to go to move back into and hold onto 4th. The team result was a little disappointing with 5th overall, considering the first 3 across the line count and we had a 4th and 6th! Hopefully we can get onto the podium soon!

A very pleasing result for my first GP, beating some big names in the process. Next weekend sees the second round of the French GP series with an Olympic Distance (10/40/5) race in Chatearoux; let’s hope I can keep on going!

    Thanks everyone, James Attard

    2nd August 08Natasha's Comeback
RUNNING for Natasha Andrews is all about willpower, not speed. Endurance events are her favourite, a time to tune out from life's problems for a bit. Listening to the meditative sound of pounding feet. Breathing. About 10 months ago, doctors told Andrews she was unlikely to run again. She was hospitalised with an infected pelvic bone and no cure. Her half-marathon win in Coburg last weekend was a huge psychological milestone.

25th July 08Ballarat Harriers win the Lap of the Lake
AFTER spending days chasing and organising their kids, these two Ballarat Harriers mothers still love to run. Rachel Gibney and Kelly Ruddick finished first and second in the women's competition of the Ballarat Regional Athletics lap of the lake. Between them they have seven children. "The first four placegetters were all mothers and we have 12 kids between us," Gibney said. "We race on most weekends, there is usually a local race and I have done three Athletics Victoria races this year." Gibney has two-year-old twin sons and a one-year-old daughter, while Ruddick has 14-year-old twin sons, a five-year-old son and a one-year-old. Ruddick returned to racing at the start of the year and has been with the Ballarat Harriers for 20 years. Her second place was the highlight of her running career. "Until last weekend, fourth was my best placing," Ruddick said. "I went out to get a personal best and set the pace so to get a medal was a bonus."

    15th June 08European Duathlon Championships
    James Attard Euro Champs Report

Unfortunately my good run in Europe didn't continue with the European Championships. My result was only slightly better than last year’s performance in Edinburgh, which was rather disappointing considering how much faster I was running earlier in the year.

Quite early in the race I found the pace to be pretty quick and above my threshold, so the latter parts of the first run saw me falling further and further back in the field. After going lactic so early in the race my day was more or less over and the rest of the race felt like just another training day really.

During the race I was actually getting really down on myself, I couldn't believe how far I'd travelled to repeat my mediocre performance of last year. I was really disappointed in and felt I'd let many people down, namely myself.

Since the race I've had time to reflect and I've realised that with my preparation I probably shouldn't have expected much better. After running PB's back in February I probably got a little excited with everything and pushed on through with training when I should have been having a break. I guess the hard thing was I hadn't planned on racing in Europe this early. I was more or less just going with the flow.

My last 10 weeks before the European Champs were far from ideal even though it included a win at the Asian Duathlon Champs. Basically I was struggling a little with a sore glute and lower leg; I was sick twice and had quite a bit of long travel. Don't get me wrong I'm not giving you excuses; I simply had to find answers as to why my performance was below par.

Although my injuries didn't cause me to miss to much overall volume, combined with being sick and travelling I missed weeks of tracks sessions in a row. When I look at all this now I just think how stupid was I to think I could go over and race well. I think at the time though I was trying to stay positive and keep all the doubts at the back of my mind.

So I guess the positive I can take from the race is I was beaten because I was nowhere near my best, it would be a lot worse if I was 100% race fit and had that result.

19th March 08Monthly club meeting for April 1st to include a forum with AV
  • Hi All,
I have invited Tim Crosbie up to our April 1st club meeting and he has accepted. This will be an open forum so we can ask for advice/assistance from A.V re the club going forward.
A.V has good ideas on how we can improve membership, attract juniors, gain publicity etc that Tim can share with us.
Also he will talk about the Ballarat combined team in the Cross Country season and he is willing to have our input into same.
While none of us need to have a very long meeting it would be wise to have a 7.30 pm start to the meeting.
If there are any issues that club members think they need to bring up other than the above then we need to advise Tim before hand.
    Thanks, Peter Jones

7th February 08Grand final track report. Grand final day: 2/2/08

What a grand day Saturday was! Ballarat Harriers have finally won the Loughlin Shield in convincing fashion. I have just checked the Harriers history book, “Always Striving” and it reveals that the last win was in the 76/77 season. So that’s 31 years. It also points out that the team in the early 90’s was exceptionally strong, but just couldn’t beat Wendouree. So it was nice to see some of the 90’s team members there spectating. The vets missed out again, despite being undefeated throughout the year. Division 2 went down by only 13 points, and here’s a surprise. If we had named two of our division 3 athletes in division 1 or 2, we would have nearly won division 2 as well!!! But no-one was to know. More on that soon.

  • Final results. Div 1: BH 99, YCW 86. Div 2: YCW 99, BH 86. Div 3: YCW 103, BH 72. Vets: Wend 98, BH 79.

How would the day unfold? Our top thrower, Andrew Green couldn’t come, our next thrower, Leigh Weber, had recently broken his wrist, and to top it off, club champ Nathan Hartigan was crook as a dog with the flu. Instead of being warm favourites, we were now an unknown quantity. But from the very first moment, everything went right. We achieved results beyond expectations in virtually every event. There was no bad luck, only good luck coming our way.

First up was the 800m, a race I will never forget. Nathan was 15 m in arrears after 1 lap. That wasn’t in the script, but he was crook. Despite this, he reached deep to find something, slowly reeled them back, and in a desperate lunge in the last metre, won by one hundredth of a second. Literally. And Rod and Sam chose this day to run dramatically better times than throughout the year to secure 3rd and 4th. Harriers up by 6 points! From then on, we knew we could do it if things went right. As for the vets, Vince looked commanding all the way to his 800 win.

Looking on from the stands was the club’s oldest life member, Norm Pinney, along with other life members Tom Roberts, Fred Luke, Willi Sawall, Barry Brooks and Barry Brown, all hoping to see that long-hoped-for title. What champions they were! John Weeks flew down from Sydney, Clark Livingston came up from Melbourne, Brian Mong came from….somewhere and Wendy and Gary Looker were all there to roar support for the club they had all striven for. And what a roar! There has not been so much cheering at Llanberris for over a decade.

And the biggest roar came for the 100m, went Harriers went 1, 2, 3. Followed by 1 and 2 in the Div 2 100m.

After the excitement of the 800m, Andrew Preston played his part by splitting YCW in the hurdles. I don’t think Andrew has ever been more desperate. Then Steven Jones stormed home in the 100m, with Peter O Dwyer one hundredth behind and our thrower, Leigh Weber, 3rd. The steeple was every bit as exciting as the 800. YCW’s Nick van Raaphorst opened a worrying lead by lap 4, over James Attard, and Nathan Hartigan was well in arrears, looking out of it. Then it slowly unfolded. James confidently took the lead and never relinquished it. Nathan, for the second time that day, reached deep to find something, slowly reeled in, and then passed Nick to snatch second. 1, 2 to Harriers.

The relay was another occasion for the Harriers faithful to roar from the stands. Coming from behind, Peter O Dwyer made the opposition look sick as he left them in his wake, passed the baton to Steve Jones, and once again Harriers were home, by 3 seconds. Division 2 next, and they repeated the dose. That wasn’t enough. The vets had to show they also win the vets relay every week and duly did so.

They broke the Harriers vets 4X200m record. (Jeff Sargent, Peter O’Donnell. Greg Whitecross and Michael O’Meara.)

Not everyone could see that equally exciting things were unfolding in the field events. This was where our throwers had to stand up without Andrew Green. The whole day was off to a better than expected start when first-year athlete, Sean Mathews threw second behind the mighty David Lynch and Edward Farquhar gained that valuable 3rd by only 5 cm. This was what we hardly dared hope for. YCW only went up 1 point. The javelin went exactly the same way, with Leigh Weber pulling out a beauty of 39.95m, surprisingly edging out Peter O’Donnell, but only by mere cms. They again took 2nd and 3rd behind Lynchy. Once again, YCW only gained a solitary point. The shot was where we would miss Andrew, but still not a bad result with Sean 2nd.

Maybe the biggest bonus and surprise came in the long jump. YCW’s champion, David Lynch had 2 no jumps and then a conservative last attempt. But our Steve Jones pulled out his best for the year, a mighty 6.06m, and won the event we were sure would belong to YCW. We went ahead in an event we shouldn’t have. Jai Aguila, just new to the club, surprised us all by winning the Div 2 long jump. The final jump event, the high jump, featured our 14 year old twins, Jesse and Jules. Jesse cleared 1.55, Jules 1.60 and YCW 1.61 and 1.65. So close. Have they made history by being the first 14 year olds in a premiership team? Well done boys. Now here’s a something unexpected. Adrian Jones won div 3 with 1.5m.

Which brings me to the surprise previously alluded to. Had Adrian jumped for division 2, he would have won division 2. This would result in an 8 point turnaround. But there’s more. James Attard, our steeplechaser, offered to fill in for the div 3 long jump. His 5.4 m would have given him 3rd in Div 1!!!! This would have resulted in Div 2 being 1st and 2nd. The overall effect of these two surprises, which no-one could have known, was that we would have missed the div 2 premiership by only 3 points!

Since our women were not in the final, several of our women were able to participate in the great day by running for the men. These were Sue Anderson, Kelly Ruddick, Ingrid Duffy and Jenny Bourke, all of whom acquitted themselves well. I’m so glad our President, Peter Jones, was able to witness and be a competing part of this premiership in his last year in the top job. He has taken it on so many times and he must be proud that his son Steven was instrumental in delivering it.

Now we come to the final event of the day, the 400m. We think we’ve got enough points to win and Peter O’Dwyer and Steven Jones look good enough. But what if YCW’s Sam Gibb pulls out a beauty, which he’s capable of, and spoils the day? There’s plenty of tension in the Harriers camp after the gun, as Sam does start off well, giving it his all. But why did we worry? Coming in to the final bend, our boys take command, and Peter O’Dwyer seals a terrific day, winning in a Harriers vet’s record time of 51.82. Steven Jones second. Jubilation all round!

Division 1 winners were Nathan Hartigan 800m, Steven Jones 100m and long jump, Peter O’Dwyer 400m, James Attard 3k steeple and the 4X200m relay team. Division 2 winners were Jai Aguila 100m and long jump, Peter O’Donnell 400m, Edward Farquhar javelin, Sean Mathews shot put, and the 4X200 relay team. Division 3 winners were Adrian Jones high jump, Kevin Ruddick hammer and James Attard long jump. Veteran winners were Peter O’Donnell 400m, shot put and long jump, (that’s 3 wins) Vince Duffy 800m, Jeff Sargent 100m and the 4X200m relay.

  • After presentations and the club photo, the victorious team carried the shield aloft in a lap of honour, and then retreated to the clubrooms for celebrations. I’m told these went on till after midnight and do not warrant a description.

  • Go Harriers.

    8th March 07Round 12 Track report
  • Harriers: Round 12 report.
You flamin’ little ripper! We had a hope that everyone might turn up for round 12, that we just might get our open men into the final, along with the women, vets and U/14. We didn’t think it would happen in such emphatic terms.
But at the end of the night, the men were outright winners with 202 points to YCW 134. And, as an interesting twist, Wendouree turned up with a few stars and even beat Eureka. (In fact, Wendouree could have been premiers this year if their heroes had turned up every week, but instead they are last on the ladder.)
  • Men’s report.
  • Round 12 score: BH 202, YCW 134, W 80, E 71
  • Ladder Div 1 men: YCW 54, BH 32, E 30, W 16
Winners were Andrew Preston hurdles, and Andrew Green triple winner in discus, shot and hammer. Well done Andrew. High points scorer, Eddie Farquhar.
  • Women’s report.
  • Round 12 score: E 179, BH 138, YCW 91, W 10
  • Ladder Div 1 women: E 60, BH 32, YCW 24, W 15
Winners were Rachel Gibney 1500m, and triple winner Jodi Willis-Roberts in hammer, discus and shot. Well done Jodi! You’re certainly our trump card. Looking like a top athlete also was Natasha Andrews gaining 2nd in the 3K only just behind Michelle Hawkes.
A most interesting development. Thanks again Anita for driving from Portland to throw the hammer (pretty well too!) Well done to all women on a great year so far. Eureka have not seen us with anything like a full team yet, and might well get a surprise on final day. It is a genuinely good team.
  • Vets report:
  • Round 12 scores: BH 161, W 133, YCW 47, E 0
  • Ladder: BH 50, W 45, YCW 25, E 4
Our vets won on the night without even trying. Well done vets and well done to our vet stalwart, Vin Duffy, who must go home exhausted every time.
  • U/14 boy’s report:
  • Round 12 score: YCW 101, BH 65, E 48, W 42
  • Ladder: YCW 51, BH 42, E 17, W 8
Winner, Jules Farquhar in the hurdles. We only had 2 boys for most of the night and both of them (Jesse and Jules) got seconds in their events. Emma and Clancy were there for the relay.
  • The future:
Now it’s time to keep training hard and make a concerted effort to be there on grand final day. We’ve done the hard yards getting in the finals in every grade we contested,
so every qualified athlete must make an effort to be there on the day, as a way of showing people like Christine O’Halloran, Eddie Farquhar and Vin Duffy, our appreciation.
These and a few others have nearly killed themselves going in numerous events week after week to make sure of a finals spot.
There will be more emails coming your way announcing teams and so forth.
  • Regards,
    Kevin Ruddick

    11th December 06Track Season Report
    Dear Harriers,
As this coming Saturday is the sixth and final round of athletics before the Christmas break, I thought it might be timely to report on the progress of the track teams so far this year.
So how are they going? Well, quite good actually. At this stage, it looks almost certain that the open men, open women, male vets and boys U/14 should all make the finals. There are two reasons for this. First, attendance from Harriers is up a bit on last year and second, all the other clubs seem to be struggling to get numbers along each week. Sadly, it's one of the quietest track seasons I can remember. Eureka don't seem to have many of their guns coming along much and Wendouree's men's and women's division one teams seem to have disappeared into a black hole. We don't wish bad times on any club, but maybe we should push to take an advantage where it is offered.
Some premiership ladder results so far are:
  • Men Div 1 YCW 23, Eur 15, BH 11, W 6.
  • Women Div 1 Eur 25, YCW 12, BH 11, W 6.
  • Men Vets W 23, BH 17, YCW 10, Eur 2.
  • Boys U/14 YCW 23, BH 16, W 6, Eur 5.
  • (Remember, the first 3 get in the finals.)
Performing well this year is the open women's team who should comfortably overhaul YCW this Saturday and go to second on the ladder, where I expect they will finish the year. The women have yet to field a full team of every registered athlete, and when they do (hopefully this Sat) I think they can give even Eureka a shake. Just the want of a couple of places has prevented them from winning for the last two weeks.
The U/14 boys are a real surprise packet, doing well with only a small team. Could I ask all U/14 boys who are registered to turn up this week and have a run at the track? Just one or two more boys should easily see these boys win a premiership. They have the ability, winning events every week, but just need a bit of help. If you haven't run track yet, please give it a try. You'll be made welcome.
The vets are turning up in reasonably good numbers and should comfortably go in to the final in second place on the ladder. Wendouree men seem to be investing all their efforts into vets this year. It will be interesting to see if we can knock them off in a grand final with every one of our vets running.
And in one of the surprises of the year, our open men are actually going fairly well. The following men have won division 1 events this year. Nathan Hartigan, unbeaten in middle and long distance, Andrew Green, shot, discus and hammer, (where he broke the club record) Edward Farquhar, pole vault, Peter O Donnell, javelin and Rod Hansen 400m and they have been ably supported with some good performances by Peter O Dwyer, Jeff Sargent, Mathew Gibney and Vince Duffy. If you think about it, if every one turned up on the same day, we've actually got a fairly good men's team. Throw in a few of our cross country champs who don't run much track and it is a team which could score well on any Saturday. I'm realistic enough to know this is not a premiership team, but it's good to see the men competing again. Last year, hardly anyone was turning up to track. This year, we are competitive, and when that happens, you can reasonably ask new, young recruits to come to the club and start the re-building process. John Borbidge has potentially recruited one or two gun runners who we hope will join, but you can only expect people to join Harriers if we have a team on the track. That's why the committee decided at the last meeting to encourage participation in Division1 and not just support the vets. So we will try to balance the two over the coming weeks and see how it pans out.
Last week was a shocker of a day, with the heat, bushfires and the Pro's meeting on at Daylesford. There was hardly a soul at the track. This Saturday will be the last before Christmas and is predicted to be a mild day. Could I ask every Harrier to make just this one day, even if it is the only day for track season for you, to make an effort to turn up and help out, either by officiating at the jump pit, or competing in some event? I'm appealing to the cross country runners, registered or not, to put in just this one day to help the track team. A good result will set us up for the final rounds after New Year, give people confidence that they can come to the track and there will be a team there, and maybe create the beginnings of a rebuild for the track team. We've got quite a lot of runners this year; we just want them to all turn up on the same day, just for once.
  • Let's make this Saturday that day! Hope to see you there. Llanberris, 2-00pm.
  • Regards, Kevin Ruddick (Ph 53 314 294)

31st July 06Peter Eason Wins the Darwin Half Marathon

More than 100 runners and walkers competed in the 105.7 ABC Darwin Half Marathon on Sunday morning. Braving the cold conditions (for Darwin - 16 degrees) competitors faced the starting gun at half past six in the morning and followed a double-eight course around the cliffs of Fannie Bay/Lee Point for the 21km event. Supported by the Darwin Runners and Walkers Club, the event attracts the best Darwin athletes including a number of top local tri-athletes.

In the men's section Peter Eason blitzed his rivals with a scintillating 1.10:00 run. He spread-eagled the field from the outset and was never challenged at any time. Second place went to Leigh Wilson in a time of 1.19:21 with Cameron Jeremiah finishing in third place in 1.22:42.

Darwin's top tri-athlete Sophie Hawken ran a PB to win the women's section in a time of 1.25:05 (previous best 1.26:50)
Hayley Barber ran home strongly to finish in second place in 1.29:14 and Sarah Ervine was third in 1.36:46.
